I’m not going to lie to you: my family HATES this thing. They think it’s too potent, it makes your breath smell like garlic, and it’s a smoothie…not a plate full of food. So, it’s NOT for everyone.
But, if you’re like me and want the comfort of knowing you got things in your diet every day that you otherwise wouldn’t eat (like raw garlic and fresh ginger and Kefir) AND you are tired of carrying plastic containers of food that you wish could magically stay warm for your post-workout errand running snack time, then THIS is your magic little pill. I, personally, don’t think it tastes bad. But, I also would eat dog crap if I was convinced it was THIS good for me.
There’s no protein in it, so I just make sure I add in extra protein to later meals. If I cared about post-workout protein, which I don’t so much anymore, I would probably add in a scoop of protein powder into this or a raw egg or two. Again, not exactly the “perfect” post-workout protein meal, but I would argue it’s more “real” than any protein powder you can find in a store or online.
I try to use homegrown herbs for this, if my plants can keep up with my demand. And, I use non-fat Kefir, just because that’s just what I use. And, I make an entire Vitamix full of this so I can pour into a couple of containers for the next couple of days.
And, I make sure I double up my masks so people can’t smell the garlic on my breath 😉
The Greenest Smoothie
1 bunch of dinosaur kale
1/2 bunch of fresh parsley
3-4 sprigs of fresh rosemary
1 cucumber, chopped
1-2 clementines, peeled
2-3 oz. fresh ginger, chopped
5-10 raw garlic cloves
1 lemon, peeled
1 cup frozen mango
2 cups frozen strawberries
1-2 cups Kefir, plain/unsweetened
1-2 cups water
*Makes an entire Vitamix full of smoothie. Refrigerate any leftovers for the next few days.
